Everyday Interactions & Common Rulings

Damage vs. life loss, counters, tapping, protection, regeneration, and lifelink.

12 min read · Lesson 8 of 8

Damage vs. loss of life

These feel the same (both lower life) but behave differently:

  • Damage comes from a source, can be prevented or redirected, and can trigger "whenever [something] is dealt damage" abilities. Damage to a player causes them to lose that much life.
  • Loss of life (e.g. "you lose 3 life," paying life) is not damage — it can't be prevented by damage-prevention effects and doesn't trigger damage abilities.

Counters that cancel, and tapping

If a permanent has both +1/+1 and −1/−1 counters, they annihilate in pairs as a state-based action until only one kind remains. Counters are not abilities — removing a creature's abilities does not remove its counters.

A creature being tapped only means it's turned sideways (usually from attacking or paying a {T} cost). It does not shut off the creature's static abilities, and tapped creatures still have their power/toughness and keywords.

Protection & regeneration

Protection from [quality] is remembered as DEBT: the permanent can't be Damaged (that damage is prevented), Enchanted/Equipped, Blocked, or Targeted by anything of that quality.

Regeneration ("regenerate this creature") sets up a shield: the next time it would be destroyed this turn, instead it's tapped, removed from combat, and its damage is healed. Regeneration only replaces destruction — it does nothing against sacrifice, exile, or a creature with 0 toughness.

Lifelink and simultaneous effects

Lifelink is not a triggered ability. When a source with lifelink deals damage, its controller gains that much life at the same time as the damage is dealt, as part of the same event. There is no trigger to respond to and it can't be "missed." A single lifelink creature blocking and being blocked still gains life for all the damage it deals.
